TPI Tuesday – Groundworks Detected
Pipeline operators want to be informed about all groundworks taking place on top of, or close to, a pipeline – whether they are small groundworks, or large groundworks, like the one presented in today’s TPI Tuesday. Orbital Eye’s monitoring solution CoSMiC-EYE uses weather-independent radar satellite data from the Sentinel-1 satellites, that are part of the Copernicus program of the European Space Agency – ESA. This data, combined with data from commercial satellites, enables a high monitoring frequency – we can monitor pipeline corridors multiple times per week. This high monitoring frequency ensures that CoSMiC-EYE is able to detect almost all events taking place in the pipeline corridor – and subsequently report them to the pipeline operators.
Satellite-based monitoring thus offers multiple advantages:
✅ Weather-independent monitoring through the use of data from radar satellites
✅ High-monitoring frequency (satellites pass over the pipeline corridor multiple times per week)
✅ Cost benefits: through a smart combination of open- and commercial data, large pipeline networks can be monitored at relative low costs
